Who is Gisela Cruz?
Gisela Cruz is a 44 year old Mixed Media artist who was born and is living and working in Coimbra, Portugal. Her mother was a seamstress and her father was a precision instruments mechanic who loved electricity and carpentry. Her old house was always full of unfinished crafts' projects, so it was easy for her to start, at an early age, learning some basic arts and crafts techniques and having projects of her own. She studied Social Communication and Organizational Communication and, later on, she even got a Masters in Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences. At 21, she was already a hard core. journalist (from radio news to printed press), then she was a publicist (she worked in the Communication and Marketing Department on a couple of important national projects, likeCoimbra, Capital Nacional da Cultura and Coimbra iParque). She also had lots of less ambitious odd jobs. She developed a taste for art itself through her own research and experiences, but also through her personal relationships. Music, cinema, theater attracted her from a young age. Her interest in painting, ceramics, sculpture, etc. was the obvious progression, her professional experience as a member of Coimbra, Capital Nacional da Cultura core crew being a significant step in the direction of her own experiments in art. The fact that she doesn’t have any formal education in art never stopped her from trying out new techniques. And her life long experience in craft dictated that her favorite form of expression became Mixed Media. During the Covid lockdowns, free of restraining schedules and responsibilities, she really dived straight into her passions and developed a collection of Mixed Media wall art called “Into The Light”, but it wouldn’t be long until her pieces started taking a 3D format and her background as a journalist – that always gave her a critical opinion about the world – started kicking in and giving them a severe social criticism character, until they became the “Hard Times” collection.

“Into The Light” is a 12 piece Mixed Media wall art collection where Gisela uses vibrant colors that can be associated with spiritual concepts and explores themes that go from self-exploration to empowerment, from the battle between darkness and light to transcendence in the attempt to find answers within. This was her fist conceptual several piece exploration and her first real attempt at organizing a collection.

"We are all artists, but some of us seem to have forgotten it. If we overcome the fear to create, then anything is possible… And I believe that that lesson is essential, not only in art, but also in life."

“Hard Times” is the first collection that Gisela will exhibit to the world. It’s a controversial thematic approach on today’s state of affairs, from a former journalist’s point of view. One who’s not very happy with the news, because they invariably seem to have become propaganda. Can an audience trust the media? Or should it be available to hear wider discussions and strive to have more structured views, considering their once trustworthy leaders of opinion seem to now be mostly globalist regime minions? That’s the question left to those who dare to immerse themselves into this collection.

Inspiration
Gisela is inspired by people, places, situations and even art materials. She works with all sorts of materials, mediums and techniques to produce conceptual, colorful and impactful Mixed Media artwork. She gets bored doing the same thing over and over, so she is often learning most techniques she uses. Mixed Media allows her to be creatively boundless. She uses acrylic paints, scrapbooking and journaling techniques, like decal or stamping, embossing, collage, etc., but she may also add to a piece some macramé, wire or crochet or whatever else feels right. She tends to use vibrant colors that can be associated with spiritual concepts, like the battle between darkness and light, self-exploration, empowerment and transcendence. She can also go deep into the world news and produce impactful social criticism pieces.

Mission
Mission
“If I have a mission, I believe it is to empower each and every person I meet to be present, be conscious, be true (especially to themselves), be fearless and always speak their minds. The world is in deep need of people to be vocal, but also kind and true.”
